About the album

The Wild One is the third studio release from Swedish pop rockers, Sugarplum Fairy. It should be noted that two members of the band are Carl and Victor Norén, who are the younger brothers of Mando Diao‘s Gustaf Norén. That said, The Wild One was released in 2008 and peaked at number 22 on the Swedish charts.

Thoughts on the album

I have thing for Swedish bands. I don’t know why that is. Whether it’s “older brothers” Mando Diao or Johnossi or even The Soundtrack of Our Lives, I just don’t know…

ANYWAY… So it’s only fitting the second month of this project starts with a Swedish band. Sugarplum Fairy‘s third and most recent album, The Wild One, maintains their history of strong and fun albums. Of the thirteen tracks on the album, “Just a Little Bit More” is a probably my favorite. It is a fun, uptempo, and almost cheerfully repetitive tune. The rest of the album is packed with stellar, single-worthy songs, not limited to: “In Berlin”, “The Escapologist”, “Here She Comes”, “Hate it When You Go” and “Bring Danger”.

Perhaps more so than the two previous Sugarplum Fairy albums, the style and tempo of the songs differ considerably from track to track. For example, “Caroline” is more melancholy and quiet, while “Never Thought I’d Say That It’s Alright” is more upbeat and poppy and of course the melodic “In Berlin”.

Whether you’re a fan of Sugarplum Fairy‘s older stuff, just discovering them for the first time, or just looking for a lovable, danceable, and surprisingly thoughtful new band to try out, this album is an excellent pick. Definitely a good spring and summer album to cheer you during the winter months.
