Artist of the Day: Jet

Day 6’s artist of the day brings us a garage rock revival band from down under, Jet. If you haven’t heard any songs from this band, you are either deaf or have been living under a rock. It is almost impossible to forget the jangly guitar riff of “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” from any movie, TV commercial, or more importantly… Apple iPod commercial.

The band’s founding members, brothers Nic and Chris Cester, originally from Melbourne Australia, founded the band in 2001 while attending college. The brothers have been quoted as saying that Australian band You Am I, have played the biggest influence in their music.

Their songs have been featured in many different forms of multimedia ranging from video games to commercials and movies. Their song “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” has been featured in video games such as Madden 2004, Guitar Hero: On Tour, and Rock Band. The song has also been featured in films such as What Happens In Vegas (2008) and Flushed Away (2006). Also has been featured in Apple’s iPod and iMac advertising campaigns.

Jet has released three albums and an EP:

  • Dirty Sweet EP
  • Get Born
  • Shine On
  • Shaka Rock

As of this date, the band is no more, having discontinued as a group. This was on their Facebook page the day they broke up:

A Message To Our Fans: After many successful years of writing, recording and touring we wish to announce our discontinuation as a group. From the many pubs, theatres, stadiums and festivals all across the world it was the fans that made our amazing story possible and we wish to thank them all. Thank you, and goodnight
